From Our Director

Dear Majors & Parents,

We are halfway through a school year already! Here are the current band notes (and here’s to hoping we don’t have weather to influence these notes with reschedules, etc.)

  1. VBODA CONCERT ASSESSMENT 3/4/22 @ WEST POTOMAC HS – Each year, our band performs at this evaluation. This year, I will be taking 1 band for assessment. Students who are enrolled in PD6 are eligible to participate; however, I am asking that they prepare a short excerpt of the band literature so that I can better decide on their placement. Our performance time is 7:15pm -a full itinerary and permission slip will follow. Please plan on some afterschool rehearsals in February to prepare the music. With our successful marching band finish, MVHS is now up for Honor Band status again.

  2. 3/12/22 INDOOR COMPETITION @ MVHS – We have successfully hosted an indoor guard/percussion competition for the past 8 years. I am asking for ALL students and at least 1 parent to volunteer to help us with this event. We have 48 schools coming to perform, which means we need 40 workers to operate all of the locations successfully for the morning through evening. This is a very important event for our program and school, and with that comes the expectation that the better our show operates, the greater our profits. There will be areas where parents are required (ticket sales, concessions) but also areas for students (guides, room monitors, door monitors). Our program is just a bit small to rely on a portion of the students/parents – we need everyone to do their part.

The table below represents our critical status (RED & YELLOW ARE BAD) with help shortages:

  1. INDOOR GUARD SHOWS – Our 2022 Winter Guard has the following competition performances: 2/5=Patriot HS, 2/19=Woodgrove HS, 2/26=Potomac HS, 3/12=MOUNT VERNON HS, 3/26=South County HS, 4/2=Championships (Hampton, VA). Please contact me or Rushel Grillo for details/schedule on any of the dates.

  1. Carpentry – I am still looking for a parent with some basic carpentry skills to construct a trophy shelf in the band room. Please email me if you can help.

  2. Drivers for Winter Guard – IF you are available on the Saturdays listed on #6 above, we are in need of a driver to transport equipment to/from the locations. Itineraries are somewhat different for each event. The driver can be 1) someone who owns a vehicle with a 2” ball hitch and can pull a trailer, or 2) someone who is comfortable driving a 10-16’ U-Haul. Please email ASAP if you can help on any of the dates
